Especially in today's troublesome economy, using the expensive of cameras, rechargeable batteries, tripods, filters, along with other accessories, you may be influenced to save some money by buying cheaper, generic digicam media. And why not? Photos taken with cheaper media need to look just the same as those taken with an increase of expensive media, providing the files get written correctly. Your JPG images will not likely appear more pixilated, and uncompressed TIFF and RAW files will support the same information.
However, "saving money" features a few potential downsides:
* Brand name photographic camera memory cards might be faster than their generic equivalents. If your digicam sports ths faster write speeds, you can take photos quicker by not waiting so long as on your digicam to keep information on top of the media. This is especially important in order to use drive mode and take multiple images in quick succession, helpful for sporting events, wildlife photography, as well as other situations involving fast-moving subjects.
* Brand name camera memory may prove to be more reliable. On some generic memory I have used, however the media did not outright fail, should you shot multiple photos quickly the memory could 'hang', causing many photos being lost. Since the photos were never successfully written for the media, these were unrecoverable.
* Brand name camera media could have limited warranties. If the media proves to become defective in just a certain time period following your purchase, it will be possible to get a replacement memory. Some warranties may provide replacements for free; others may need modest shipping and handling charges.
Even with limited warranties, however, any lost photos for the defective media may remain lost. In some instances, media recovery applications could help. While I don't vouch for any particular software program, publishers include DataRescue, Jufsoft, and MediaRECOVER.
* Brand name digital camera memory might be rated to deal with better in two opposites (cold and hot environments), useful in case you plan on mountaineering or shooting photos in a beach or desert. Of course, such environments you might take care of other weather-related problems including faster-draining batteries and condensation forming on the camera lens.
* Even should you want to purchase brand digicam memory, you could be tempted to purchase such media from lesser known stores, online outlets, or merchants. After purchasing items at some establishments (though most certainly not all), many times yourself with counterfeit memory, generic memory repackaged as manufacturer! Such memory might increase the odds of data corruption, perform slower than advertised, and potentially damage your camera as you insert or eliminate the media. Plus, counterfeit memory lacks any true warranty, whether or not the fake packaging claims you are offered. As the adage goes, in case a cost is too good being true, it just could be.
(Note that if the scam occurs you, you can not always blame the shop to the sale. It could have unknowingly purchased this memory from the fraudulent distributor.)
I am not recommending always acquiring the most high-priced media at the most costly retailer - it's your choice. Some of the above potential downsides might not apply to your digicam or your shooting conditions. You might not require faster shooting, and definitely not all generic memory will corrupt important computer data. However, for the people truly worried about their photos being written correctly and transferrable to backup media without incidents, paying a few extra bucks may prove to be money wisely spent.
