Today I opened a document in Microsoft Word (a novel review that I was poised to write, barring the odd alteration with a sentence or two) when trying to modify this document the screen went blank. I suppose the right thing to get done at this point would have been to head to edit>undo but I didn't.
I was frankly mystified; I'd already suffered a shock last week-end when my lap top suddenly refused to reply and I had a rather depressing a day or worry until a buddy here had diagnosed a problem with battery. Relief!
In these 24 hours, it provided the opportunity to think about simply how much we have a tendency to depend on our little machines. Just over last year, my old PC caught the herpes virus as well as the same thing occurred, suddenly. I lost, not simply some precious writings but all my email addresses, passwords and stuff I can't (or don't wish to) re-call.
It brought back exactly the same memories: It was like having too difficult where a large part of my existence had been removed and I had exactly the same situation last weekend, albeit just for a day approximately, zombie state.
I do usually back-up things with an external H/D but I must admit I'm a little lax for this. Luckily at that time, several of my old emails were stored on the greetings card internet site so I was very grateful to the a minimum of.
So returning to this morning. I opened the document, comprising some 1000 words or thereabouts and as soon as I attempted to start being active . words the screen went blank, immediately, no warning, no: "Are you sure you want to ditch this couple of hours of the creativity?"
No - nothing, zilch.
Then I tried system restore, which I may not go anywhere near and also have it disabled (eventhough it seemed to have re-abled itself today by itself - curious?) Negative result anyway.
So, I searched and I searched, from the usual channels and I may find this 19.5 kb file easily however with the identical result - blank page.
Now obviously it has to be somewhere on my small hard disk drive but where? I even checked the re-cycle bin in the event, but again, no.
I spent hours on the web, trawling through the Microsoft (soft inside head?) "support" which. as usual had me going round and round and rou....what?? Oh, yes!
Sorry about this, just nodded off, the truth is.
I even down-loaded a recovery programme and, naturally, re-cycled that very quickly.
Point is, I'm a bit nervous now about writing any articles, when they can just disappear in smoke before my eyes. I always save, save, save as I'm writing but about this occasion, I'm writing direct onto Street Articles just as a precaution and will decide to save any future stuff as a draft; a minimum of that way, I know it's available somewhere.
I'd advise someone else to complete the same.
Meanwhile, if any of you everyone has a potential response to this bizarre problem, you may could make me aware, so I can avoid it in future.
Many thanks.
