Following a hard disk drive crash or perhaps the discovery your flash memory is corrupt, use PhotoRec to recover lost images.
Hard disk drive crashes affect everyone, in spite of their chosen operating-system. In the rush to resolve this type of problem, however, you can easily overlook some fundamental considerations. PhotoRec is available with its sister product, TestDisk, which is used to recover lost disk partitions. This tool is for recovering data and fixing harddrive drives, whereas PhotoRec is made especially for recovering image files.
Available free, PhotoRec and TestDisk enables you to scan disk devices for lost images files and recover them. It is a great tool for image recovery on big hard drives and smaller camera 'card disks' alike, and will be quickly downloaded and installed (example below performed using Ubuntu 10.10). You can either do that the difficult way, by browsing to and downloading TestDisk for Linux before unpacking and installing using the Terminal, or you can undertake it the straightforward way'
Go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager and check for TestDisk. You should realize that just one result is returned, this also needs to be right-clicked. Select Mark for Installation from the context menu and Apply. You might view a summary of what files is going to be downloaded ' again, click Apply.
The PhotoRec and TestDisk applications might be downloaded and installed on to your Linux computer. The entire process shouldn't take very long whatsoever, once complete you is going to be able to begin scanning your Linux PC and attached disk devices for damaged and corrupt image files.
In order to restore images on your own hard disk drive drive or any disk device inserted within your card reader, open the Terminal (Applications > Accessories) and enter:
sudo photorec
This will launch the tool inside the Linux Terminal, and permit that you decide on a device being scanned. You will should find the kind of partition table which has been used on the disk. For instance if you're trying to recover data from the disk formatted for Windows, you would then find the Intel/PC partition option. Similarly if you had formatted your flash media with a Mac, you would need to choose Apple partition map.

Once a partition type is specified, PhotoRec will invite that you use the Search option (available through the left and right arrows on the keyboard) to get the damaged or lost files. Select a directory and do not write the recovered data for the same disk or partition how the damaged file is on since this may cause issues with recovery.
