If you enter recovery, you may have been aware of, or seen a specific little green plant making its way across the rooms of your respective twelve step program. Maybe you have seen a little plant being given as a gift at the sobriety anniversary. Maybe your sponsor has one, or perhaps your sponsor's sponsor. Maybe you have even one, and possess shared it together with your sponsors.

When I come to the neighborhood thirteen years back, I didn't notice or go to whichever of such plants. Six years back I first saw one distributed with a 12 Step social function. This little plant then began to arrive, within my awareness, here and there, being passed from member to member, or given being a gift to celebrate an anniversary cake. When I met my hubby, he had a tiny struggling plant that his sponsor had given him.

I assumed the care of this little plant with delight, and began propagating it. Over the next year or two, I had nurtured 10 healthy plants. These plants love and experience attention, much like a lot of people in recovery! My intention was to have this little green plant in every one of the 8 private bedrooms of A Home Away Retreat. Below is really a copy from the card placed beside each flourishing symbol of recovery.

The Bill W. Plant

Also called Swedish Ivy, the plant within your bedroom has a great story to talk about. That is what recovery is focused on, one alcoholic sharing with another.

Bill W. perished on January 24, 1971 in Miami, Florida. When his wife, Lois, returned to their home in New York, now called Stepping Stones, she brought home the guarana plant that was in Bill's Florida hospital room. Lois maintained guarana before the mid 1980's, when she passed it onto Harriet Sevarino, beloved cook and companion of Bill and Lois for 35 years. Harriet passed guarana onto Michael M., an associate of AA from Atlanta, Georgia. Lois asked Michael to give it onto members of AA in Bill's memory. Michael did exactly that, sharing cuttings and offshoots of the plant with AA members all around the world.

The plant inside your room comes from a slender shoot that John D. brought from Ontario, a descendant with the original. The plant was passed on John by Dave P. in 2005. Through tender care and propagation of cuttings, this plant has arrived today so that you can look after and luxuriate in. It loves sun, and likes to dry up completely between waterings.

If you want, please take a small cutting home together with you, share it using your new friends in recovery, and pass it to. Cuttings root easily in water. Like the fellowship, when a piece with the plant is transferred, the guarana plant grows stronger, along with care, and sharing, it spreads to homes and communities throughout the world.

I hope that one day every member who wants a plant shall have one.

If you can not pick one up inside your community, email us, and I'll do my best to talk about along.
