When a file is deleted or even the Recycle Bin is emptied, the data it includes is not actually erased. Instead, the area it occupies for the disk or storage device is marked as readily available for reuse. If you realize your mistake immediately, special undelete software should be able to recover an accidentally deleted file. The longer you depart it, though, the higher the chance that the data will likely be overwritten, rendering the file lost forever. For this reason, it is critical to move quickly to optimize your chances of success.
The file-recovery software we'll be utilising is called Disk Digger. However, don't download or do the installation until we indicate how to do so. Disk Digger is shareware, and although it'll enable you to recover files without registering, you will get a nag screen for every file before you give the $15 fee.
Recovering Files from External Media
1) First we'll explain to you the best way to recover files from external media like a USB memory stick or maybe your digital camera's memory. In this case, it's perfectly safe to download DiskDigger on your hard disk. Open your browser, visit diskdigger.org, click Download and Download now, then save the Zip file for your Windows Desktop. Double-click the Zip file and you should see two files: license.txt and diskdigger.exe. Rather than installing permanently on the system, DiskDigger runs from this .exe file; double-click it to operate it. Depending on which version of Windows you've, or whether you've got WinZip or similar software installed, you may be inspired to extract or run the file - choose Run.
2) The opening screen shows every one of the disks, so choose the one containing your lost files and click Next. Various choices presented. For now, accept the defaults by hitting Next again. Your disk is scanned and then for any deleted files listed; this might take the time. If this works, and lots of files are located, head to Step 3. If not, click Back and select Dig Deeper. This time, once you click Next, you're shown more options; we recommend you accept the defaults and click on Next.
3) The files found is probably not shown using correct filenames but partial filenames or sector numbers, like Sector 109450. This isn't valuable in identifying lost files. DiskDigger supplies a method of previewing the lost images or, for other file types, exploring the first few bytes. Select the file inside the list about the left and choose the Preview or perhaps the 'First few bytes' tab. The Thumbnail option inside View menu is also useful; it shows small images instead of the sector numbers inside the list. For non-graphic files, if your first couple of bytes don't identify your file, you might need to try recovering files speculatively and opening them within the relevant application.
4) Once you've identified your missing files, ensure they're selected inside the list around the left and then click 'Save selected files...' in the top-left in the screen. Hold down Ctrl as you select each sector to decide on more than one. In the 'Browse for Folder' dialog box, choose the folder that you would like to restore the file (this should not be for the same device because the lost file) and then click OK. The missing files will probably be saved with names including sector546026.JPG, so rename them using far better descriptions.
Recovering Files from the Hard Disk
5) If your deleted file is in your harddrive, do not attempt to download DiskDigger to that disk - it could possibly wind up overwriting the file you're attempting to recover. There are two possible solutions to this predicament. The easier, but less reliable solution is to download DiskDigger with a USB memory stick or other external storage device and run it after that. Follow the process described in Steps 2 to 4 - in Step 2 pick the harddrive as an alternative to external media, along with Step 4 decide to save the recovered file to a external device. This last point is important - never do just about anything that may write in your hard disk before you're sure you have your missing files back.
6) There's a degree of risk connected to the process described in Step 5, because there's a possibility an application that's running - as well as Windows itself - will write to the hard disk drive behind the scenes. The safer choice is to modify your PC off in the wall - shutting Windows down may cause any settings being saved to disk - then install the disk to a different PC being a secondary drive before looking to recover your files.
